A Summer Family Photo Shoot | Detroit Family Photographer

From Bump to Baby to Big One: A Summer Family Session in Metro Detroit

There’s something I’ll never take for granted when I get to watch a family grow and ask me to document their milestones. When clients come back year after year, it feels like catching up with old friends, except our time together ends with a gallery full of sweet memories, an album to turn the pages of, and wall art to be admired.

I first photographed this beautiful family when they were expecting their baby girl during a Spring maternity session. Then, I got to meet their daughter at her cozy newborn session in the studio. And now, somehow, she's one. This time, they came back for a sunny, joy-filled summer family session complete with one-year portraits and, of course, a cake smash to celebrate the big milestone.

Mama’s dress and baby’s outfits are all complimentary from the Client Closet.

Summer sessions always hit differently, especially in Michigan. The warm light, the way little ones giggle barefoot in the grass, and the relaxed, playful vibe make this season perfect for natural, joy-filled family photos. This family leaned right into it, and their gallery reflects just that: fun-loving energy, sweet moments full of connection, and those blink-and-you’ll-miss-it milestones that are so worth preserving.

As a Detroit family photographer, I love helping parents document these stages, especially the in-between ones. You don’t need a “big reason” to book photos. One year olds who are just learning to walk, families chasing after toddlers in the sunshine, the way your baby still fits in your arms - these are the moments that tell your story.

We started the session with relaxed family photos, capturing cuddles, kisses, and a few laughs. Their little one was full of personality—curious, sweet, and a total ham for the camera (which made my job way too fun). We wrapped it up with a cake smash in my vintage white high chair, where she fully embraced the mess with a huge smile on her face. Worth every second.

Tips for Family Photos with a One-Year-Old

Whether it’s your first time booking or you're coming back for a milestone session, here are a few things I always suggest to make the most of your session with your one-year-old:

1. Plan around nap time.
A rested baby is a happy baby. We’ll plan your session for when your little one is at their best, usually morning or early evening.

2. Bring a snack and a comfort item.
Some quick bites (think puffs, Cheerios, or an applesauce pouch) can work magic. And don’t forget their favorite lovey or toy to help them feel at ease.

3. Embrace the unpredictability.
One-year-olds have a mind of their own, and that’s honestly what makes these sessions so real and fun. I’ll follow their lead and capture them just as they are - busy, giggly, sometimes serious, but always perfect.

4. Keep outfits simple and comfy.
Soft, breathable fabrics in neutral tones or soft pastels photograph beautifully and allow your baby to move and play. (Bonus: bring a backup outfit for the cake smash!) Of course, you’re welcome to use the outfits from my Baby Client Closet as well.

5. Don’t stress the mess.
Especially during the cake smash! Some of the best photos happen when you let go and let them get messy. I’ll take care of capturing all the little details - from frosting-covered fingers to big belly laughs.

If you're thinking about summer family photos, now’s the time. Whether it’s your baby’s first birthday, your toddler’s newest milestones, or just because you want to hold onto this chapter a little longer, I promise you won’t regret freezing these moments. They fly.

Let’s make something beautiful together. Reach out to book your own relaxed, heart-filled summer session. I can’t wait to meet you.
